Mention Franschhoek (French Corner) to any South African (or any visitor to our country), and they’ll tell you it is a world-class Winelands destination, renowned for its exquisite food offerings and premium wine cellars, all situated in an unbeatable village setting.
One of these premium estates, Boschendal, with its iconic Cape Dutch Rhone homestead, has been perfecting winemaking finesse for more than three centuries and is as much part of Franschhoek as the towering mountains that surround it.
This accumulated skill in the cellar is blended with a passion for preserving the environment and a dedication to farming using sustainable methods. That’s why it is no surprise that Boschendal was awarded the Conservation Champion status by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), not least for our efforts in preserving the delicate Cape Floral Kingdom (the richest but smallest plant kingdom in the world), as well as our use of biological farming practices.
By respecting nature and doing our best to conserve it, we are ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy our beautiful estate and surrounding countryside as much as we do. And what better way to savour fine wine than in the scenic Franschhoek Valley?
Named Franschhoek after the Huguenot settlers who moved here in the 17th century (after fleeing religious persecution in Europe) and brought their winemaking skills with them, Boschendal’s ‘home village’ has something in common with Canada – our proud French heritage. That’s why we had a feeling that Canadians would appreciate our expertly crafted wine offerings; such as our world-class Boschendal 1685 Chardonnay [which is available all year round through Vintages (Essentials Collection)] and Boschendal 1685 Cabernet Sauvignon (also available through Vintages, but in limited quantities).
Canadian connoisseurs will no doubt be impressed by the winemaking expertise that is expressed in the glass, while detecting other nuances that are uniquely South African, due to each carefully planted vineyard’s specific terroir.
